Romantic Industrial Charm at The West Mill
We just never get bored of weddings at the gorgeous West Mill in Darley Abbey but Rach and Matt's day gave us the extra-special-feels which we look for in the days we feature. Beautifully captured, as always, by the mega talented Magda K, the images speak for themselves - the styling, the blooms and all the little details were spot on and Rach's dress - stunning!
We caught up with Rach who told us all about her day - from the venue choice through to the wedding breakfast menu and tip for to enjoy your wedding planning...
“We chose the west mill as our venue as it has such a romantic industrial charm. It very much suits the style we try to achieve in our own home. It couldn’t have been better suited! There is no other place like it that has managed to maintain its authenticity.
Because the venue is so beautiful and is dressed with original decor and props, you can add as little or as much of your own style as you like, and because all of the features ….. our personality anyway, we didn’t have to add too much. We made our own table numbers from old bike chains as we are very much into our mountain biking. They were sat in reclaimed machine cotton bobbins on the tables. Our flowers were wild and beautiful. I’m not sure of the names but i know there were pink ice protea, fine fern, thistles, roses and eucalyptus. Our flower girls had gypsophila flower crowns. The flowers were arranged in industrial style vases I’d been collecting and an array of seasonal Isle of man Fynoderee gin bottles, that are beautifully decorated…being very patriotic to the isle as well as the love of juniper berry beverage! Table settings were displayed on coppers hoops that hung from the ceiling that were also decorated with flowers. We also had candles in vases and candelabras around the venue.
I wore the made with Love Harlie dress with the made with love wings. After buying a jesus Piero, I had a change of heart and fancied something a little slinkier. My shoes were Charlotte Mills George pearl. The groom and best man wore reiss suits. My four gorgeous bridesmaids wore Ghost dresses and my adorable flower girls wore john lewis. We agreed that since the groom had to wait to see what I wore for the day, I also had to wait to see what the groom chose to wear. I completely trusted matt and despite me trying to influence his choices, he knew what he wanted and set out to get it….it just took him longer to find it than it did for me to find my dress!
All except for the fish and chip canapés was vegan at our wedding. Our other canapés were potato fritter with tomato relish and curried cauliflower balti on a crostini with mango chutney were the other options. The wedding breakfast started with a summer salad with sun-dried tomatoes, asparagus tips and pine nuts drizzled with a fresh basil dressing (which many of our gusts have since made at home, it was so delicious), followed by butternut squash risotto, roasted root veg, honey roast parsnips, sugar snaps and mange tout, new potatoes and a mouth watering delicious chocolate orange tart to finish…even if you didn’t have room after the massive main you would have made room for this one! Mother of the groom made the wedding cake. All vegan, naked cake with gold flake and wedding flowers. A vanilla and fresh strawberry top, chocolate sponge for the mid layer and the megan markle lemon drizzle for the ba
We spent hours, upon hours selecting the perfect wedding band and were certainly rewarded on the day! there wasn’t a set of shoes in the room that didn’t hit the dance floor. I couldn’t have asked for anymore. only a few weeks prior to the wedding I spoke to Gavin who told me that all his equipment had been stolen in his car. My heart sank! But, they turned up on the night, greeting us like long lost friends with hugs all around and they turned our wedding into the best party of our lives! My heart melted as I heard the start of our first dance song, Van Morrison, Into the Mystic. After sending it over just a week before our day, the boys had learnt to play it. so romantic. What an amazingly talented, friendly and awesome group of guys!!! The only problem with such a fantastic band is that everyone was too busy on the dance floor to realise that the Oh Photo Booth was downstairs! I would recommend jack to anyone wanting to add a whole load of fun to their wedding. He got everyone involved, brought the silly fun out in everyone and we have some amazing photos as fun memories of all of our guests from the wedding! What a great guy!
Words of Wisdom – Enjoy the planning. You can’t make a wrong decision. make sure that its all about you two and don’t be influenced too much by others. Your wedding day is the best day of your lives and there is no room for worry, just smiling, smooching, laughing and lots of dancing!”
