Introduction

A wedding day that was fun, relaxed and filled with love…

Karen and Martin's wedding was everything they had dreamed of: fun, relaxed and filled with their loved ones. Jess Yarwood, their wedding photographer, captured their beautiful images and documented their special day without interrupting the flow of things. The couple explain that she felt more like a guest!

Karen and Martin both fell instantly in love with their wedding venue, thanks to its gorgeous outdoor ceremony space. They were lucky enough to be spoilt with sunshine on the day itself, after a rather grey and drizzly morning, which made it feel even more special. These lovely newlyweds couldn't have asked for a better day to start their new life as Mr and Mrs, so let's hand you over to find out more…

TELL US ABOUT YOUR VENUE…

Makeney Hall was one of the first venues that we found on our internet travels, and was actually the only one that we both loved the look of. We were especially sold on the idea of getting married outdoors, and the stunning woodland ceremony area really helped seal the deal. Our wedding coordinator, Antonia, and everyone else at the venue were absolutely amazing – no job was too big and no questions too daft. They made the day go seamlessly – it felt so relaxed and easy.”

DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR WEDDING…

“My mum’s side of the family are from the south of France, and so we paid homage to my roots with our décor and colour scheme. My mum, auntie and I had spent the previous summer stitching and sewing little lavender bags for favours, and I also had lavender in my bouquet.

The colour scheme of dusky pinks and whites complemented this, and were set off by the blue suits worn by Martin and his groomsmen. We also wanted to have a range of textures in our décor so that things weren’t too polished or perfect – we wanted the day to reflect us as a couple, and for it to feel relaxed and comfortable. Another personal touch was the baby photos that we’d framed and included in the table centrepieces – and they made for a good conversation starter!”

WHAT DID YOU ALL WEAR?

“I wore a lace dress by Eternity Brides with a mermaid silhouette and illusion back. I felt so beautiful in it, and loved that there was room for me to eat a meal AND have a dance in it. I knew as soon as I’d put it on that it was ‘The One.’ My bridesmaids wore dresses in mismatched shades of dusty pinks and purpley-greys, all bought from different online stores. I loved how their dresses suited their figures and personalities, but still looked beautiful together as a group. The most important thing for me was that they each felt comfortable and beautiful – and that they’d had a say in what they wore. They each chose their shoes and jewellery – I’m not a fan of things being too matchy-matchy so felt pretty chilled out about their choices.

Martin and his groomsmen all wore a blue suit with a dusty pink tie and pocket square to complement the colour scheme. I loved how smart they looked and the blue felt fresh and summery.”

WHAT DID EVERYBODY EAT AND DRINK?

“Immediately after the ceremony, guests were served Pimm’s or Peroni and canapés out on in the garden, then after the formal group photos we went into the conservatory for the wedding breakfast.

In keeping with our general vibe, we wanted the food to be unfussy and delicious – and it was! We had a choice of leek and potato or tomato soup to start, followed by either chicken with prosciutto or baked salmon with a herb and champagne crust. For pudding, there was chocolate fudge brownie with ice-cream or tangy lemon tart with a berry coulis, all topped off with coffee and chocolates. The portions were generous and everything was mouthwatering.

Later on in the evening, there was a BBQ to help keep people going on the dance floor and to soak up some of the shandies.

We had a fantastic photo booth, which was a real hit – it was quite literally never empty, and made us a really memorable, increasingly mad guestbook!  We also had a DJ, who kept the tunes coming and the dance floor busy.”

ANY WORDS OF ADVICE FOR FUTURE COUPLES?

“Without wanting to sound too clichéd, remember to stand back and take a moment to just look around at everyone on your big day. It goes by so incredibly fast, and just taking stock of all of the people who had come to celebrate with us and make it special made us realise how loved and how lucky we were.”
