A classically romantic wedding at Thoresby Courtyard and Riding Hall for this happy couple…
Hollie & Stephen's wedding day at Thoresby Courtyard simply oozes romance and we just know you're going to feel truly inspired for your very own special day. We'll hand you over to the happy couple so you can find out a little bit more about their celebration…
TELL US ABOUT YOUR VENUE…
“Thoresby Courtyard and Riding Hall was the perfect ‘blank canvas’ wedding venue with the beautiful St John’s Church in Perlethorpe within the estate. The team at Thoresby are open to anything and really encourage you to have your wedding your way, which was exactly what we wanted. We got married in the small but stunning St John’s Church then walked through the grounds of the Thoresby estate before meeting our guests for the drinks reception in Thoresby Courtyard. The wedding breakfast and evening reception were then held in Thoresby Riding Hall.
Before our venue search we wrote a list of ‘must haves’ and ‘would likes’ and Thoresby ticked every single box!”
DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR WEDDING…
“From the moment we got engaged we knew that we wanted our wedding to reflect us as a couple – our likes, interests and adventures. The theme of our day was celebrating our adventure together with the people we love the most accented. The colour palette was blush pink, grey and duck egg blue incorporating sunflowers, wood and lights!
We spent a lot of time choosing the details of our wedding, ensuring that everything had a link to us, from the bespoke invites featuring a storyline of our relationship (which we also displayed at the reception venue) to the meal from our first date being recreated for the wedding breakfast. We also had a firework finale, which has a sentimental significance to us, and even created a new signature cocktail named ‘Broom Shake the Room’!
Some of the smaller personal finishing touches were the things that we loved the most. Our master of ceremonies was an old school friend of Steve’s, Hollie’s Grandfather drove her and her Father to the church, Steve’s sister cut the log slice centrepieces and the favours were pin badges saying either ‘Team Groom’, ‘Team Bride’ or ‘Team Broom’ (for us and the boys!) as well as a personalised one.
After the wedding a lot of our guests commented that the personal touches made the wedding more enjoyable as they felt that it really was a celebration of our relationship and different from other weddings they had attended.
We really value photography and videography as a way of capturing memories for a lifetime so spent a lot of time choosing our suppliers, ensuring that we met with them. Lewis Fackrell and Sheridale Productions were both outstanding on the day and we are so thankful that we chose them. Then with Hollie’s love of selfies a photobooth was a must and we adored the stylish retropod from Snapcandy!
Once engaged I browsed some wedding dresses online saving one that caught my eye. However I then decided to stop and stay open minded for my appointments, forgetting all about the dress I saved. The whole experience at Lori G Bridal was amazing. By the end of the appointment I had fallen in love with a beautiful Allure Bridal blush pink and champagne dress with a huge tulle skirt that made me feel like a princess. After I chose the dress my maid of honour checked my phone to discover that this was the dress I had saved two months before! It really felt like this dress was always meant to be mine and I adored wearing it.
Our wedding day felt like a dream that we never wanted to end and we couldn’t keep the smiles from our faces all day! It was the perfect start of our adventure as Mr and Mrs Broom.”
WHAT DID YOU ALL WEAR?
“Once engaged I browsed some wedding dresses online saving one that caught my eye. I accessorised my dress with a stunning custom length Richard Designs veil that had small crystals on which glistening in the light as I walked down the aisle.
The bridesmaids wore multi-way dresses from Debenhams. I liked these dresses as it allowed them to style it in a way that flattered their shape and made them feel comfortable. Having your girls beside you on your big day means a great deal, and I know they do a lot to assist in the preparation and on the day so I wanted them to be happy with their dress. The multi-way dresses were the perfect way of ensuring that everyone was happy and still matched each other!
The groom and groomsmen all wore suits from Jon Paul formalwear. Steve wanted a navy suit that he felt comfortable in whilst also looking smart and stylish, plus his sons were able to have exact matching suits!”
WHAT DID EVERYBODY EAT AND DRINK?
“Our first date was at a pub in Buxton where we met for Sunday lunch. We recreated the meal (a roast followed followed by syrup sponge and custard!) for our wedding breakfast along with our favourite starter. The guests were then treated to a tower of Krispy Kreme doughnuts (our go to favourite treat) at the evening reception!
We aren’t wine drinkers so broke ‘tradition’ and had beer and processco at the drinks reception and on the tables at the wedding breakfast. The bar then also had signature cocktails available in the evening – a ‘Her’ cocktail (strawberry daiquiri), a ‘His’ cocktail (Cuba Libre) and an ‘Ours’ cocktail (Broom Shake the Room). We wanted our guests to have a lovely day and were aware that all had travelled a long distance to come to the wedding so we made sure that we used a chunk of our budget to supply a decent amount of free booze! It was certainly appreciated and there were a few sore heads at breakfast the next morning, with a few not even managing to make it out of bed!”
HOW DID YOU ENTERTAIN THE GUESTS?
“The wedding breakfast tables included a couple of things to keep our guests busy. The favours were pin badges saying either ‘Team Groom’, ‘Team Bride’ or ‘Team Broom’ (for us and the boys!) as well as a personalised one with statements such as ‘I came for the Krispy Kreme doughnuts’, ‘My shoes are killing me’, ‘If found please return to the bar’ and even ‘Maths Geek’ for Hollie’s old university friends. The pin badges were a little surprise for the guests and a talking point for them throughout the night. We also created ‘I Spy’ cards for the guests to try and capture specific pictures throughout the day using the bespoke artwork from our invites.
Our speeches broke tradition as we had a speech by the bride! As Hollie said at the start of her speech, you can never stop her when she has something to say and she wasn’t about to start keeping quiet just because she was now married!
Our guests were entertained the evening by a live band who also played music until the end. This allowed plenty of time for us to throw our best shapes on the dance floor!
We chose to book a photobooth for our wedding as we love how fun they are and that they provide a different type of photograph to your photographer. We wanted to make sure the photobooth complemented the style of the wedding and venue and to avoid some of the tacky setups. The stylish retropod from Snapcandy was the perfect choice and we had a lot of fun looking at all the pictures afterwards!
We arranged for a fireworks display at the evening reception. Firework hold a special place in our hearts and we have many fond memories of bonfire nights together and with Hollie’s family, in fact our engagement party was held on bonfire night! Illusion Fireworks provided an amazing display which filled the sky with colour. It was whilst watching the firework display that Hollie got all emotionally as it dawned on her this was it, we’d pulled off our dream day!”
ANY WORDS OF ADVICE FOR FUTURE BRIDES & GROOMS?
“Enjoy the process of planning your day, it is all part of the fun of getting married! We planned our day in 9 months whilst Hollie trained to be a teacher, so things were already quite busy and could have been quite hectic! We decided to have a wedding planning day each month and would use these days to research and make our decision. We looked forward to and always enjoyed these days, rather than letting the planning take over our life and become a chore!
And of course the most important thing – this is your day to celebrate your love for each other, and that is the most important thing.”
