TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING VENUE…

“I’d always wanted to get married in a barn venue and having gone to a wedding at Donington a few years ago which we both loved, this place was always top of the list for us. I loved the gorgeous rustic feel of the venue, it’s so full of character, plus the fact that you can get married and have your reception there as well just made it all so easy for us and the guests.

Another deciding factor was that Donington is dog friendly. It was a deal-breaker for us that our French Bulldog Cooper would be allowed to join us on the day and Donington were fully on board with this – he was even allowed to stay with us on the wedding night!”

DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR WEDDING…

“Our wedding style was based around a rustic, lilac theme. Lilac was my mum’s favourite colour and as she passed away in 2004 it was a really visual way of including her in the day – she would’ve loved all the lilac everywhere! As I’m a graphic designer I designed all the stationery along with other bits of decor including signs, confetti bags, menus etc all of which featured our little R&A logo, which really gave the whole day its own unique branding across everything. We had jam jars decorated with twine, lace and lilac ribbon – once they had the flowers in on the day, they looked gorgeous! We also had lots of beautiful handmade bunting, fairy lights and hired giant light up letters that looked amazing in the Threshing Barn. Seeing it all come together on the day was fantastic and exactly how I had envisioned!”

WHAT DID YOU ALL WEAR?

“My dress was from Berketex Bride in Nottingham. I tried on 4 dresses and they were all lovely but there was one that I came out in and my friend said “that’s the one” and I knew it too. I’d wanted something big but simple and been adamant that I didn’t want any lace. However this dress had a lace across the bodice scattered with clear sequins that shimmered as I moved and I couldn’t help but love it – despite the lace! The finishing touch was a gorgeous little bow at the waist – anyone who knows me knows I love bows, so this dress had my name all over it! I also got my beautiful headpiece from there and my full length veil.

For the bridesmaids dresses we went to David’s Bridal. They do a huge range of dresses in a vast array of colours, and we found them a beautiful one shoulder style with lace detailing that complimented my dress perfectly and in the most gorgeous wisteria colour. Rob wore a grey slightly tweed style suit and tan brogues from M&S with a lilac tie from Ted Baker – he never wears a suit so he looked very handsome on the day!”

WHAT DID EVERYBODY EAT AND DRINK?

“We had Pimms for our reception drink straight after the ceremony (perfect for what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the summer!) and then a 3 course meal served in the pig sties. This was followed by our amazing Krispy Kreme doughnut tower! We’re both massive Krispy Kreme fans so it was the obvious choice as an alternative to traditional wedding cake! The guests absolutely loved it and the staff at Donington did the most fantastic job putting it together for us – it looked amazing!”

HOW DID YOU ENTERTAIN YOUR GUESTS?

“As we had the outside courtyard exclusively to ourselves, along with the amazing weather, we didn’t need much in the way of entertainment. For the evening reception, we just had an iTunes playlist.

If you can, try to go on honeymoon straight after the wedding – even if its just a weekend away. It’s a stressful time leading up to the wedding and it was such a relief to get away from everything straight afterwards. Plus you get to stay in your little wedding bubble for a little longer before you come crashing down to everyday life again when you get back!”
