| TIME TO CELEBRATE | Happy 10th Birthday to Save the Date!
No, we can’t believe it either. Save the Date Magazine celebrated its 10th birthday this Autumn which means it’s been a whole decade since we landed with our little glossy. A lot has changed since then and we’ve managed to cram oodles of fun times into those years – lots of laughs, the odd stress, 44 copies of the magazine produced and printed, more events than we can even remember and SO much more.
So, it seemed only fitting that we got together and had a little catch up and photo shoot with the lovely Rachael Connerton in Abbi’s newly converted garage/office! We managed to get a little interview thrown in for good measure too … so here goes!
Rachael – 10 years, wow! I remember you starting all that time ago and getting a phone call from Lydia asking if we wanted to be part of Save the Date. What was the hardest part starting the business a decade ago?
Lydia – Well, the recession had hit and everyone thought we were mad starting up our business when the state of the county was so bleak. But we like a challenge! So we went for it. But trying to get wedding suppliers to believe in our concept and have faith in us right at the beginning was a challenge. We were two young girls and had quite a few doors slammed in our face in those early days but we would dust ourselves down and keep going. There were some days when we wondered if we’d done the right thing but so glad we persevered!
Rachael – What’s your earliest memory of starting the business?
Abbi – Trying to build an IKEA desk!! It was an absolute mission and we had such a laugh trying to put it together in the spare bedroom of Lydia’s old house (which was our office for the first 2 years). What should have been an hour’s job took us forever and a day and it was still rocking and unstable when we’d finished!
Rachael – What do you enjoy the most about running Save the Date?
Lydia – The wedding industry is a lovely place to work. Full of creative, like minded people who are passionate about what they do. We work with the best wedding suppliers in the business and love seeing their businesses evolve from an idea into a fully fledged, amazingly inspiring enterprise. It’s a really satisfying feeling to know we’ve been a part of their journey.
Rachael – What do the next 10 years have in store for Save the Date?
Abbi – Well, running a business as two women, we’ve managed to get through two babies (Lydia’s) and now I’m ready to pop and due in January so once we’re both back working in the Spring, we’re full steam ahead with more events, more magazines and turning lots more of our ideas into a reality. It’s going to be a juggling act but a fun one.
