The musings of a chief bridesmaid

Ruth is a Wedding & Events Co-ordinator at a venue in Derbyshire. She’s also a vocalist soon to be performing at weddings, she helps organise a music festival, she’s just moved into her first house with her partner and the most important job of all…she’s chief bridesmaid to her sister and her best friend!

Well, we’re finally in the house and I am exhausted already! That’s before any of the hard work starts. I now understand why moving house is one of the most stressful things a person can do! All the family chipped in and helped with the move last weekend though which made things much easier. Chris (my sister’s fiancée) helped Mike (my fella) load, pack and unload all of our furniture. Once we were in the house my auntie started on the sash windows cleaning with a toothbrush! Very intricate work. My dad started checking all the electrics and making sure he knew how everything in the house worked so he could pass on the knowledge to Mike and I (he’s such a dad!) and my mum bless her, straight to the bedroom with freshly washed covers & sheets to make up the bed so we had a comfortable first night!

In between all the moving chaos my sister was at her place making food & decorating for a party which she threw for Chris’s birthday. It gave both families the chance to finally meet! Both Katie (my sister) and Chris were pretty nervous about the whole thing but they were great hosts! Introducing everyone, topping up wine glasses & getting everyone involved with party games, the evening was a huge success. I think it’s natural to worry a little about whether your families will get on with each other at your wedding but if you make time to plan something like a party, a gathering or a meal it really is worth it as it breaks the ice before the big day. It might also make you realise who won’t gel so you can arrange the seating plan accordingly!

Just in case you were wondering, duties to my other bride-to-be (my best friend Laurie-anne) will commence shortly; she’s due to get married in July 2013. She’s coming over to the new place tonight with wine and wedding magazines. I might be up to my arms in ‘house to do’ lists and decorating but I love helping those closest to me…and I love weddings! Bring on the busy times!
