Suzanne and Jon’s Winter Wedding at the Carriage Hall
When planning their wedding, Suzanne and Jon knew what was important – sharing their special day with their friends and family. This wedding has a wintery glamour feel whilst keeping a relaxed intimate atmosphere.
Over to Suzanne to tell you more…
“We were married at the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit, West Bridgford, It is a small homely church, which suited us perfectly. I thoroughly enjoyed our church service, as it’s the first time you get to see all your family and friends who have made that extra special effort to be with you, especially on a snowy December day. The service was made very special by my school choir leading us in singing, which they did perfectly, with the music led by two fellow teachers from my school. They managed to bring a tear to Jon’s eye when they started singing the entrance song and it was one of the most talked about features of the day! They did us proud!
Our makeup on the day was by Ali Gunn who did a fantastic job not only on the makeup, but by keeping me calm and relaxed in the morning. Our hair was by Melanie Rhodes Bridal Hairstylist, who was so helpful during my trial and was perfect on the wedding day with so many people to get through. They both made us all look beautiful and were a joy to have around, especially after such an early start and a treacherous journey through the snow in the morning.
I was worried about wedding dress shopping as I am extremely indecisive, therefore I tried on so many wedding dresses before I found ‘the one.’
I had my heart set on having something different, that I’d not seen on anyone else before, as well as being suited to a winter wedding. I ended up getting my dress from Angelica Bridal in Islington, London, where my best friend and bridesmaid Liz, had made me an appointment. At this point I had been to so many dress shops and tried on plenty of beautiful dresses, but nothing that stood out.
We ploughed through at least fifteen dresses in our one hour appointment until we found my dress which was so unique with the sewn on cape detail and added sparkle for that Christmas feel. It was the dress that made me stop and I felt very different in it to any others I had tried on. I looked at my friend and we both had tears in our eyes so I knew it was something special. From then on every other dress was compared to it, but nothing matched up. I brought my Mum and sister to see it, who also fell in love with it; that’s when I knew I had found my dress.
I then took it to Jenny at SewandSew4u based in Beeston for my alterations, to save me travelling up and down to London for every fitting. Jenny is AMAZING! I cannot recommend her enough. She listened attentively to how I wanted it to fit, which was difficult with such delicate fabric. I also had extra sparkle added to the lace on the dress; so it caught the light and added to the winter feel. She did not disappoint and was exceptional. My dress was a perfect fit, and everything I wished for.
With it being winter, I knew I wanted a fur coat for my photographs outside, which was a gift to me from Liz, it looked great in the photos and added to the glamour of my beautiful bridesmaids in their black, lace dresses, which I bought from Mango.
I had my beautiful headpiece made with the help of Mary from The Wedding Room, Chilwell. She took on board exactly what I wanted and gave me many options to choose from. I’m so glad I found her as it really did look beautiful and was one of my favourite pieces.
I purchased my cathedral veil with swarovski crystals from Carla’s Brides, Compton Acres, and also got my shoe clips from there, which I had never heard of or seen before. They clipped onto the front of my plain, ivory satin Rainbow Club shoes and fit perfectly with the sparkly details from my headpiece to my veil and dress, finishing the look off perfectly.
I didn’t start off the planning with any particular style in mind apart from knowing I wanted glamorous, black bridesmaid dresses which made a statement and would look beautiful against my dress and luckily enough the snow!
I didn’t want anything too fussy and as the planning progressed I wanted our day to have personal touches that meant something to us. Our favours were pin badges for Parkinson’s Disease and Breast Cancer Care, two charities that are very close to our hearts. We had simple candle centre-pieces with tea lights for a warm Christmas feel. Our table plan was based around all the special places we travelled during our seven-month trip around the world, which was made by my brother-in-law as well as the matching table names.
My brother played his guitar and sang whilst our guests were on the mezzanine and we were having our photographs taken, another special personal touch.
All the stationery was made by family or myself. Jon’s sister and Mum made our wedding invitations; I designed the wedding Order of Service that carried on the theme of the winter tree from our invitations. My brother-in-law made the table plan and matching table names.
We hired our cars and card wishing well from Marlow’s in Hucknall, who provided a superb service and made everything from the booking to the final details completely stress free.
Our wedding reception was at The Carriage Hall, Plumtree. I loved the simplicity of the building and the fact that it spoke for itself and didn’t need much decoration. The 12ft Christmas tree, high ceilings and Christmas decorations dotted around the venue left very little for us to do, as we didn’t want to spoil the effect.
We had difficulty finding a venue which would cater for our number of guests, but Mel at The Carriage Hall was extremely helpful and accommodating to our needs, with all options made available to us depending on our final numbers, which we were very relieved about, as out hearts were set on this venue.
They did not disappoint on the day and the wedding meal went down a treat with all our guests, it really was delicious!
I didn’t opt for the usual wedding guest book that people write in, instead I ordered a wooden box with our names and winter tree design on the front, where people had to write on wooden hearts which are kept in the box. I found this on Etsy and was not disappointed when it arrived.
Our wedding photographers were HBA Photography and they were absolutely outstanding. We had some bad news in the lead up to our wedding day and therefore did not provide them with much direction with regards to our photographs. This didn’t matter in the slightest! They were very patient and accommodating to us and our guests. We followed their lead completely on the day and were not disappointed with the final results. All our guests commented on how discreet they were which is exactly what we’d hoped for. Our aim was for the photos to reflect the relaxed, family feel of our wedding day and they did it perfectly. They are true professionals and I am so glad we found them at the Save the Date Wedding Event back in March. Once we spoke to them, we knew instantly they were the photographers for us, friendly, understanding and easy to work with.
This was also true for Geoff from Our Wedding Videographers, who we also found at the Save the Date Wedding Event, to do our wedding DVD. He was also very discreet on the day as well as friendly and easy to work with. Exactly what we wanted. We are very excited to see the final edit soon.
We spend every minute planning what we want to be the perfect day.
Unfortunately for us, in the lead up to our wedding day Jon’s Dad fell ill and he was unable to attend our special day. It really opened my eyes to what’s important on the day, the finer details didn’t matter, just that we were surrounded by family and friends who wanted to wish us well and be there for us. That’s all that’s important.”
