I thee Wed – Kate and Danny
One word for this wedding and that is spectacular. What a location. What a setting. Just WOW.
Submitted to us by the lovely ladies at bride&glory, one of the most attentive and passionate companies we’ve had the pleasure of working with since beginning Save the Date. Their brides are very lucky to have such fantastic, enthusiastic and experienced wedding planners helping them plan their big day, every step of the way.
Kate and Danny married on the 13th January, this year in the beautiful Austrian ski village of Gargellen. Prepare to swoon guys. Over to the winter wonderland bride, Kate:
Gargellen in Austria, close to the Swiss and Italian borders is a fantastically picturesque little ski resort in the Montafon region. We got married at the local registry office in Schruns and then had a blessing at a beautiful chapel in Gargellen.
My father’s family has been going to Gargellen for pretty much the past 50 years – it’s a proper family tradition. Gargellen is a magical place, especially in the snow, and it became even more meaningful to us when Danny proposed on our last holiday there. There was no doubt that we wanted to go back and get married where we had gotten engaged but the thought of arranging it all from here was a little daunting – especially since we had very little time to organise it.
Luckily, we knew that between Hans-Karl (the owner of our hotel and family friend) and our wedding planner (Anna MacDougall of bride&glory Wedding Planning) we had the best possible support. Hans-Karl and his team organised everything at the hotel in terms of the menus and logistics. Anna looked after all the legal aspects of the ceremony and organised an English speaking vicar to do the blessing. The fact that Anna speaks German was priceless. She guided us through the bureaucratic minefield and communicated our vision of the day to everyone involved, so we knew that not even the smallest detail would be, quite literally, lost in translation.
I don’t think I really had any specific expectations or ideas what I was looking for in terms of my dress. I found it immediately though – in the first shop we went to, it was the 3rd dress I tried on. It was (or is!) a beautiful Ian Stewart gown and, cheesy as this sounds, it was literally a perfect fit from the second I put it on.
Getting married in a ski resort, we very much wanted to pick up an Alpine, winter wonderland theme. At the same time, we didn’t want it to feel to Christmassy (it was January, after all), so we opted for a very simple and elegant colour scheme of white, ivory and silver with lots of winter foliage like ivy, pinecones and green berries. It turned out exactly how we pictured it, the decorations were fabulous and my bouquet was just divine.
After our blessing at the Chapel, the hotel welcomed us with bread and wine, which apparently is an Austrian tradition for newlyweds and is supposed to symbolise ‘fertility luck’. It was so thoughtful of them to surprise us and we loved having a local custom as part of the day.
And then of course, there’s Danny’s Portuguese skiing instructor, who filmed the wedding and presented us with all the snowboarding gear you’ll see in the pictures. He’s the one who taught Danny to ski and was also secretly involved when Danny planned to propose.
Given the blind faith with which we had to jump into some of the elements of the day, it couldn’t have been more magical. Our day represented our vision perfectly and we consider ourselves very lucky to have been surrounded by people who clearly know what we wanted and helped us achieve exactly that. Such a cliche but if we could, we would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Luckily, the hotel gave us a week long stay as a wedding present, so we’ll be able to go back and reminisce soon!
Huge thanks to Kate and Danny and of course, the lovely Anna of bride&glory. The perfect blustery Wednesday ‘pick me up’.
