Getting To Know The Handmade Sign Company
We’re over the moon to have recently welcomed Jenni, the creative soul behind The Handmade Sign Company to our Cream of the Crop Wedding Directory, and we just know you’re going to love her hand lettered wedding signage for your special day.
Established in 2019, Jenni is super talented and hand makes and hand letters all of her work – from signage to table décor, selfie boards and alternative guest books. We’re having a natter with the lovely Jenni so you can find out a little more…
Tell us a little bit about your wedding business? How did it all begin?
“I started The Handmade Sign Company, creating hand lettered wedding signage in January 2019. Before this I had been a graphic designer for 14 years, but with a young family and having suffered from post-natal depression after my youngest, was born, I knew I needed a change of direction. I fell in love with modern calligraphy whilst on maternity leave, and found it an incredibly therapeutic craft that helped my mental health a great deal. I have always had a huge passion for creating bespoke items from scratch, so I left my design career behind me in November 2018, and began creating hand lettered signs for homes and gifts. However, just a few weeks in, I was approached by a lovely couple who wanted me to create some signage for their big day, and it was then that I knew I had found my real passion! Since then I have worked with lots of amazing couples from all over the country on their wedding signage, and I am incredibly excited by how far The Handmade Sign Company has come in such a short space of time. I was also recently awarded as the Best Special Touch for the East Midlands in The Wedding Industry Awards 2020 which I am incredibly proud of!”
What makes you stand out from the crowd?
“The biggest element that I believe sets us apart from the rest, is I never use any stencils, vinyl or printing, and every sign that I make is always made and painted entirely by hand, bespoke to each couple. However, I am also very passionate about sharing my own personality through my business because I am a big believer that what makes us all different is us. As a result, I like to work closely with all of my couples which helps me to create unique, personalised signage that they will want to treasure for many years to come.”
What products do you offer?
“The most popular signs that I create are my reclaimed pallet welcome signs. However I also work with plywood, acrylic and fabric, to suit different styles and budgets, as well as offering bespoke options for couples looking for a completely unique sign. Because everything I do is hand lettered and painted, there is no end to the possibilities of what I can letter on, such as watering cans, jars, plant pots, mirrors etc. My other popular products are my unplugged ceremony signs, table plans, name places and alternative guestbooks which are a great way of treasuring your guests well-wishes to display in your home after the big day.
Whilst I offer a wide variety of options to suit all budgets, I also run lettering workshops, which are always incredibly popular. During the 2 and a half hour sessions, I give my guests an introduction into modern lettering and sign writing, so that they can create their own signs, which is perfect for DIY couples who want a more hands on approach.”
Couples are loving going green for weddings! Do you have any eco-friendly wedding signs?
“Absolutely! The most popular, and also my favourite material to work on, is the reclaimed pallet. When I source the pallet slats, they are usually in an awful state, and I just love being able to turn them into something new that adds such a personal and unique touch to a couple’s big day.
Reclaimed pallet is also incredibly versatile, with endless possibilities from name places to order of the day signs, and can also easily suit many styles and themes of weddings. Aside from the pallet, I can also source other reclaimed materials for bespoke orders. I recently had the pleasure of being a part of an eco-wedding shoot where I created a huge 8ft long banner backdrop from reclaimed fabric, along with hand lettered watering cans for the table centres and they looked absolutely stunning!”
Which is your most loved product?
“I’d have to say the welcome signs. I think what I love most about them is this is often one of the first elements guests see when arriving at a wedding, and I love to see how each couple customise them to show off their personality. On top of that, the majority of my customers then display their welcome signs on a wall in their homes as a keepsake from their big day, which just makes me feel incredibly honoured that something I created is treasured for so many years to come.”
What trends do you see for weddings in 2020?
“Circular signs are definitely going to be a popular trend for wedding signage in 2020, and I am totally loving it as they look absolutely incredible. I also think more and more couples are actively seeking something different and out of the ordinary. Our reclaimed pallet selfie boards which we sell separately or hire out with our wooden arch is already hugely popular for the year to come as an alternative option to a traditional photo booth.”
Who is your dream client / what is your dream wedding?
“In all honesty, I couldn’t name just one. Regardless of size, budget, venue or style, what I love most about all of the couples I have had a pleasure to work with is that every single one is different, and I am grateful to be a part of them all! That being said, I do always love the opportunity to get creative and do something completely out of the ordinary.”
What do you love most about being a part of the wedding industry?
“Being able to get up each morning and know that you are not only doing something you love, but also getting to be a part of something that is so important and so personal to my customers is a huge privilege. I absolutely love the entire process from meeting a couple, finding out all about their big day and then working with them to create those perfect finishing touches for their wedding.
I also love the incredibly inspiring and supportive network within the industry and I am ever so grateful for all of the amazing suppliers I have got to know and collaborate with since I set up The Handmade Sign Company.”
