A Bride’s Journal | Emma & Andy | Part Three |
The lovely Emma & Andy are back with their third and final instalment ahead of their special day…
The Hen Party
Have you been on your hen party? Tell us about it!
My hen party was expertly arranged by my three bridesmaids and Mum and all I knew was where it was – I didn’t even know who was going! They wanted to take me somewhere ‘pretty’ so chose York and we were fortunate to have lovely sunny weather all weekend. They booked a beautiful Airbnb for the 7 of us to stay in and put so much effort into making it personal to me. The first activity was a ‘Greatest Showman’ dance class and we had such a laugh learning the routine to 3 of the classics. The Greatest Showman is one of my all times favourite films so I had an absolute blast – my face must have been a picture though when the teacher told me I was there for a military fitness class! Next thing I knew I was told to get changed into something white, and we sat down to a lovely 3 course dinner cooked by our very own gourmet chef at the house. The girls all wore grey (a lovely nod to my obsession with the colour!) and we spent the night dancing away to cheesy tunes on a rotating dance floor!
No visit to York is complete without a trip to Betty’s Tea Rooms and they had organised for us to have champagne afternoon tea the next day. Back at the house we played the obligatory hen do games and everyone was completely shocked when a surprise turned up at the door! I had the most amazing weekend and my cheeks and stomach ached for days from laughing so much. Can we do it all again?
How did you know your wedding dress was ‘The One’?
Wedding dress shopping didn’t turn out to be a fairytale for me – it was undignified, I didn’t go to a boutique shop, sip champagne and find ‘the one’. But looking back, I had the most wonderful ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience with my Mum by my side. We spent weekends visiting different shops (some offering us champagne) and trying different styles. But by the umpteenth dress, it felt more like a chore. Shops kept telling me I needed to ‘think about making a decision soon’ to order it in time, and the pressure suddenly started mounting. Struggling to find ‘the one’ I made the decision to have one off the peg which my Mum very kindly bought and I chose to have custom alterations. That came with its own stresses though and I came away from one seamstress in floods of tears. Thankfully I was recommended someone else and my dress is currently a work in progress! My top tip, from experience, for anyone thinking of going dress shopping for the first time – wear nice pants! And preferably some with plenty of coverage!!
Have you done any beauty prep ahead of the big day? E.g any favourite products that you’d recommend to our Save the Date Brides?
Skincare is the one thing I think I will stress about nearer the day. My skin is prone to breakouts and it always seems to happen when there’s a camera about! I’ve started to drink a lot more water and maintain a good routine but I’m just hoping my skin is kind to me on my big day!
What sort of things have you got left to plan?
The majority of big things are booked or bought and the invitations have all been posted – we’ve just got rings left to get now. I’ve continually picked up little things since we started planning and I’m going to make a lot of the decorations myself over the summer. I’ve found great bargains on Amazon, eBay and Instagram shops, but do be warned when buying online to check measurements carefully!… I bought a Jenga set from eBay to use as a guestbook, but it turned out to be a miniature one, no taller than a coffee cup!
How will you be spending the night before the wedding, e.g pamper evening?
We’ve booked lodges for the lead up to the wedding and we’ll both be spending the night apart with our families. They each come with their own private hot tub so I envision enjoying a nice meal then sitting out with a glass of prosecco and relaxing as much as possible before the excitement of the big day!
Watch out for Emma & Andy’s wedding day!
