A 1950’s Hollywood Glamour Tea Party
We love photo shoots. And we love them even more when they are pieced together with clear direction and creativity. Kathryn Edwards Photography, who was behind this gorgeous 1950’s Hollywood inspired shoot tells us the story behind the images and how if you put your mind to it, your imagination can become a reality ….
“The inspiration for this shoot started with the dress. There is a little boutique in Nottingham, not far from where I live called FROCK that make 1950s style dresses and they have a small but perfectly formed bridal collection. Every time I looked in the window, I coveted one of Esther’s dresses, and when I decided I wanted to organise a styled bridal shoot, I contacted her to see if she would be interested in loaning me some of her samples. She agreed, and the rest grew from there.
I knew I wanted it to be vintage inspired, sophisticated and refined, and so I collected all my amazing suppliers and created a Pinterest board to gather ideas for the shoot. Everyone knew exactly what I wanted and the shoot came together brilliantly. I felt very lucky to be working with such a creative and talented team.
I knew I could go two ways with the 1950s dresses, either the rockabilly, retro and rustic style, or the more glamorous 1950s Hollywood. I decided on the latter. So with that in mind, I decided I wanted to shoot glamorous sirens having tea for two in a luxurious, pretty setting, with lots of light. The Orangery at Stoke Rochford Hall provided the perfect setting. I was delighted when they allowed us to use the grounds of the hall, as well as The Orangery as the backdrop to our shoot. I took pictures of the venue beforehand, and this further inspired the High Tea feel to the shoot.”
I have worked with my florist, Rebecca of Foraldeco at a wedding before and I knew her creations would be amazing. When she told me she had some bird cages, I thought these would look great hanging from the trees in the grounds. Rebecca styled this part of the shoot herself, with beautiful pastels and pearls, and we draped pearls around our model Elly Lucas for a real high fashion modern vintage look.
Mirlah from Best Day Ever provided the stationery and the fabulous giant cake topper. She was totally in tune with the styling and feel of the shoot, and even found a bird cage for the table plan. It looked stunning.
Karen from Darby & Joan was responsible for the overall styling of the shoot and provided all the props. Again, she knew exactly what I was after, and her styling was impeccable.
Amy from Amy L Wilkinson, Professional Makeup artist and Alison Jenner (hairstylist) worked with the models to produce exactly the right old Hollywood glamour, and the girls were stunning. Rebekah Hemsley and Ely Lucas had the perfect look, and again I feel extremely lucky to have found them as they were a great asset to the team, and worked tirelessly all day. Klaire Van Elton provided the bridal adornments. Her work is exquisite, and her pieces gave the shoot the modern twist I was after.
The cakes were made by Natalie of Yummy Little Cakes. I have photographed Nat’s cakes before at a few weddings, and her creations are always beautiful. I knew I wanted macarons as well and Natalie didn’t disappoint. She created three cakes in pastel coloured icing and they looked so pretty with the macarons as well.
The last mention must go to Betsy. A little vintage ice-cream van I have photographed at weddings before. I contacted Amy at Betsy’s Vintage Emporium and told her all about the shoot, and she was happy for Betsy to be involved. The ice-cream is delicious and the van itself is the perfect addition to any vintage wedding. It looked great against the pastel 1950s bridesmaid dresses from Frock. These were some of my favourite photographs and provided a lovely playful element to the shoot. I decided I wanted to photograph Betsy’s owner Amy, as she always dresses in a vintage style when she is serving the ice-cream, and I thought she would look great in one of the dresses.
